Not a bad read, but it's not clear where fiction and fact merge or separate. This is NOT a purely nonfiction book. In fact I question how many "facts" truly are. In the epiloge he States Midway Island is (I assume at the time of publication) a base for Polaris submarines. Nothing could be farther from the truth. No Polaris sub EVER, even docked at Midway. Being a former resident of that island I am very aware of Midway's military history, obviously moreso than this author. With this big an error, I consider this book an interesting historical novel, but not one worth ten bucks.Product details

Interesting read from a historical point of pre-WWII aviation and political developments. Obviously much more to the story(ies) which; hopefully, will be made known someday.
Great telling of the US expansion into the Japanese sphere of influence before ww2. Pan Am and the US Navy building bases on tropical islands to be outpost for spying on Japan.

Most interesting read on the seldom researched story of the China Clipper air route through the south Pacific Ocean just prior to the major fighting of WWII. Amazing what was going on as British leaders were trying to save their declining Empire, the US was trying to gain economic control of the Pacific ocean and Japan was opposed to both countries having any islands with airfields which might be a threat to their expanding empire. Fills a small but interesting gap in Pacific Ocean history.
This book is an odd mix of information (with no way of knowing how much is true), and conspiracy theory.
The pages are not even numbered.
Quotes are provided, but where the author found them is not provided. Words are put into President Roosevelt’s mouth, along with numerous other Federal Government officials & businessmen. The author fails to give any indications of where he got them.
The same goes for many of the authors “facts” “sabotage” committed by Japanese agents prior leaving the US. Another point is, how did other Japanese agents hide inside the plane for the days & nights it took to fly the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean? Don’t forget they would not have had access to facilities all day every day. The men, and their waste, would have stunk to high heavens!
Another point. How can the author possibly know what that took place after radio communication was lost? When the war was over the US Occupation forces researched absolutely everything that Japan did prior to, and throughout, the war years. Nothing was found that would even remotely back up the authors suppositions. No one on the plane was ever seen or heard from ever again.
As I read I really wanted to believe what is written. However, due to the above issues, and many more, I couldn’t, and still cannot.
A fascinating behind-the-scenes story of how the establishment of a series of seaplane bases across the Pacific helped America prepare for war with Japan -- and how the total disappearance of a China Clipper en route to Canton with a Chinese-American businessman aboard with a suitcase holding millions in cash implicated the Japanese government -- and hobbled China's fight to defend itself against Japanese aggression.
The book explores how Pan American Airways, from Day One, expanded and thrived with the help of the U.S. government, due partly to Juan Trippe's wealth and social connections, and how Pan Am literally and figuratively came to represent an extension of American power, particularly in the Pacific. This was not lost on the Japanese, who oddly registered editorial protests rather than using formal diplomatic channels, over the construction of Pan Am bases across the Pacific. Japan recognized there was little difference between what it took to build a civilian seaplane base, and what it would take to build a U.S. Navy installation for use during wartime, and the author lays out a highly plausible argument that the Japanese government went so far as to attempt sabotage, and may have been responsible for the disappearance of the plane that is the focus of this book. There is one incident in which the FBI apprehend Japanese agents trying to damage a Martin Clipper's radio before it departs from California, and on this I have two comments The exact source of this information ought to be identified (the book would seriously benefit from footnotes), yet the fact that there is no public awareness of this incident speaks to the censorship our government could exercise in decades past, even in peacetime. A similar incident of steel rods sunk in the bay near the Clipper's Alameda base, which tore into the plane's fuselage and led directly to the cancellation of a flight, was suppressed and went unreported at the time -- but there is a clear implication that it was due to Japanese sabotage.
The book would benefit from a good editor (I found the failure to capitalize "Navy" when referencing the U.S. Navy irritating, and the broken paragraphs a bit distracting) but overall this work represents an important, heretofore ignored chapter of the history of U.S. pre-World War II influence in the Pacific.
