The fifth book in the Rose Simpson Mysteries series. It is 1931 and Rose Simpson is busy with preparations for her forthcoming marriage to the young Earl of Belvedere, not thinking for a minute that she will be required to use her detective skills. Against her better judgement, she is persuaded by the earl’s sister, Lady Lavinia Sedgwick, to come to the aid of one of her acquaintances, Millicent Grayson-Smith, whose diamond necklace has been stolen. Believing the culprit to be one of the servants, Rose visits Crossing Manor to commence her investigation, little realising that she will soon be required to investigate a murder in the servants’ hall. “Murder in the Servants’ Hall” is full of intrigue, clues and red herrings, with nearly everyone having a motive for wishing the victim dead. This is a classic country house murder mystery set during the golden age of crime and will appeal to fans of Agatha Christie and Downton Abbey.

I love Rose Simpson novels. Usually I write only one review about a series and Rose is worth another one. She is delightful and this book takes her out of her usual haunts and gives us a well-researched look into the "below stairs" life of Victorian England. I am eagerly waiting for Book 6. I do think you should start at the beginning if you have not read any Rose Simpson before. Although every book stands alone, there are too many references to Rose's past that you will understand if you have read the previous books. If you have read up until now, buy this one. It is another really good, 5-star Rose Simpson novel.Product details

Murder in the Servants' Hall Rose Simpson Mysteries Volume 5 Ms Margaret Addison 9781523840113 Books Reviews
Totally enjoyable till the end. The Upstairs & Downstairs world is described well. Mystery solving is described in good details
Rose does it again...beats the police to the truth of the matter in spite of the fact that her wedding is just days away! Her rather vain sister in law to be has dragged her into this and really needs to be held accountable but her confidence in Rose's ability to solve murder mysteries clouds her judgement. A very good read!
The story here is fairly interesting, but this writer goes on and on with explanations. Maybe she's just trying to add length to her book? But what she could say in one sentence she takes a whole paragraph to do. Furthermore, in this book she describes the differences between the servants' quarters and the main house repeatedly throughout the book.
Some of it was very farfetched too, or maybe she knows nothing about sewing, but it is not believable that someone could open seams and insert something and sew it up so that no one could know in that amount of time.
It is very annoying when writers use the word, "adverse" for "averse," as she has done in several of her books. Sorry to be so critical, but I'd like to see better editing and get back to good quality writing!
I don't usually write a review, but I have to warn others not to waste their money. The premise was promising, though the first book was a bit irritating, but sometimes characters improve with practice. This author SERIOUSLY needs to get an editor - I have had eight graders who could write a better constructed paragraph - and she also needs a class on character development. All characters are shallow in first novel, but if anything, they become more so in the second. The "Jerk" from novel one turns up in novel 2 as the one murdered, and the heroine cries out that "she killed him" because she wasn't nice enough to him the night before when he was drunk and crying about a housemaid that committed suicide after he got her pregnant. Honestly.
I would give this series no stars if I could - and I want my money back . AVOID THIS SERIES TO AVOID SERIOUS IRRITATION.
The diamond necklace was left on top of Millicent Grayson-Smith's jewelry case all night. It was still there when she went in to take her bath, but gone when she came out. A thorough search of the room and the servants' quarter turned up nothing. In desperation, Millicent calls Lady Lavinia Sedgwick, a very slight acquaintance, to come and recover the necklace. Fortunately, Lady Lavinia's brother (Earl of Belvedere) is soon to be married to Ms Rose Simpson, detective. And Rose agrees to help and appears in the guise of Lady Lavinia's maid to find what's lost. We meet the servants, experience the hidden part of the great house with it's ghastly wall color, the uneven stairs, the discarded furniture, the bare attic rooms and, of course, we follow Rose in her sleuthing and share her antipathy towards Cooper, Millicent's maid, and Anthony, the handsome and short-tempered nephew of the butler, Mr. Mason. Rose has suspicions and we are suspicious along with her. And then there is the ruthless murder of Cooper and the police has to be called in after all. Lots of interviews follow. Rose is busy interviewing servants without them becoming suspicious of the meddling stranger. Of course, there is also blackmail, misplaced valuables, love lost on a scoundrel, strict matrons and an absent master. The guilty party is revealed, the scoundrel is sent on his way, the master and mistress will (hopefully!) be happy ever after.
I enjoyed Murder in the Servants' Hall maybe more than the other Rose Simpson books because Cedric was in it very little! Some of the descriptions are tiring, but all in all it was an enjoyable read. I just wish she would find someone besides Cedric . . .
This story line is very original and is told well, with a lot of emphasis on life "backstairs." The interesting plot line consists of the heroine going undercover as a servant in a grand country house, in order to solve a theft. Along the way a murder occurs. The author does dwell rather extensively on the contrasts between the two sides of the house, but I think it is warranted when Downton Abbey made servant life look fairly pleasant. (I recommend watching the BBC documentary "Servants The True Story of Life Below Stairs." It supports this novel's viewpoint.)
Another reviewer caught this point this depiction of life as a servant is actually Victorian, not between-the-wars. By the 30s there was a severe shortage of servants because women who had worked in factories refused to return to service.
As with all the other books, this is an author with good imagination, clever mysteries and decent characterization. She still uses words and grammar incorrectly. Another reviewer mentioned "adverse vs. averse" and I have found quite a few "who vs. whom" errors as well. Editing is a virtue, people!
